If we’ve learned anything from the COVID-19 crisis, it’s that our ability to thrive during a shelter-in-place mandate is directly tied to the safety and stability of our housing. Problems such as leaky roofs, mold, drafty windows, and the like threaten the health, safety, and financial security of Lenawee families and cause further concern beyond the risk of contracting COVID-19.
Homeowners facing situations like these are among the most vulnerable in our community and turn to Habitat Lenawee for help. They are our repair clients and part of our Habitat family. Including:
- a senior couple who could not be reunited at home until their floor was repaired and it was deemed safe
- a single mom with 7 kids, who’s roof was leaking in her children’s bedroom
- a 94-year-old woman who needed a new roof and grab bars to stay in her own home
- a family whose manufactured home needed a new roof; there are no programs that will assist with repairs on manufactured homes
Through our Repairs Program, we offer loans that allowed these clients and more to complete home repairs at a fraction of the cost. However, they are still left with a small balance and make payments to Habitat— sometimes for years. These clients have all been paying on their loans, but the pandemic has made honoring this commitment an extra burden.
